Bio
Jonathan T.J. Henneveld is a multifaceted trombonist, a Performing Artist with Antoine Courtois, and currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Southern Mississippi in the United States of America with Dr. Ben McIlwain.
As a freelancer, Jonathan has played with several orchestras, for example, Prinsens Musikkorps, Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, Sønderjyllands SO (South Denmark SO), and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, amongst others. Next to this, he won the solo competition of the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus and got to play as a soloist with Aalborg SO in 2020. Recently, he won the Gower Concerto Competition and was rewarded a Solo feature with Orchestra performed in February 2024.
Besides playing, Jonathan is passionate about teaching and trombone pedagogy. He taught at the Orkesterefterskolen, and the music schools in Holstebro and Struer, Denmark. Now, he teaches the music majors, and coaches chamber ensembles as part of his Graduate Assistantship at USM.
As he wishes to expand the repertoire for trombone solo and choir, he is actively commissioning pieces. As part of consortiums, he has received pieces from composers like Kevin Day, Ben Dondanville, and Ben McMillan.
He started his studies in the Netherlands with Michael Eversden and Dick Bolt at the Prins Claus Conservatory in 2014. Here he focused on Bass Trombone and orchestral music. Later, he went to study in Denmark with Prof. Niels-Ole Bo Johansen at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. Here, his focus began to include the sackbut, tenor, and contrabass trombone. At the Academy, he finished his Bachelor's, Master's, and recently the Soloist’s studies.
